I now have three stainless steel cooking grates for my eleven year old SM-066 Amerique smoker. I began replacing the chrome grates when I couldn't scrub them clean after a smoke without damaging the finish. My rule is anything that touches food gets cleaned every time. Greasy, cruddy cooking grates I will not use. So, over time, I now have three cooking grates in stainless. They allow me to scrub as hard as I want with a scotchbrite pad if necessary, and never worry about the finish. And, they clean up nicely in the dishwasher with, again, no worries for the finish. If you can afford 'em, get 'em.
